THANK YOU INTERNET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CEILING CAT HAZ HERD MY PRAIRZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm too excited to speak for long without caps lock on so I'll let KYM explain:

About

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is a Canadian/American flash cartoon series produced by Studio B Productions based around the My Little Pony Universe. It was developed for television by Lauren Faust, who also worked on The Powerpuff Girls and Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends. Since its on-air debut in October 2010, The series became a popular subject of threads, reaction images, and macro images on 4chan.
Those who are avid fans of the ponies are commonly known as “Bronies”, and often use their little ponies to instantly derail threads.

Origin

On October 10, 2010, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic was aired as part of the debut of the new television network, The Hub, which ended up replacing Discovery Kids. On October 19, 2010, Cartoon Brew wrote an article about the show entitled, The End of the Creator-Driven Era in TV Animation, which had an oddly alarmist tone to it. Threads on 4chan’s comic and cartoon board, /co/, attacked and made fun of the article for this reason. The article and the threads generated /co/’s initial interest in the show, causing several members to go and watch the first episode. After the second episode aired on October 22nd, threads about the Ponies started to boom even more, gaining the show fans outside of its target demographic.

Spread

4chan’s /co/

Since as early as January 25th, 2011, Single Topic Blog Equestria Daily has been monitoring the census & frequency of Pony-related posts on 4chan’s /co/ (cartoon) board, publishing a series of statistical graphs showing the growing trend of My Little Pony on 4chan. For the latest charts, check out the blog’s Statistics archive.

Elsewhere on 4chan

While /co/ initially loved the series because of the artwork and animation, fans on /b/ seemed to enjoy the plot and characters more. The “cute and cuddly” nature of this show is the opposite of what members of /b/ like to think of themselves as.
It didn’t take long for the show to cross over with other memes, such as “Post ending in x will y”, nor did it take long for threads with over 200+ posts about the show to become common, as shown here.

Episodes can be easily found on YouTube. Since the show generates more profits through merchandise than it does actual viewership, Hasbro has not removed any episodes posted online as of yet. Many of the comments on youtube videos of the series show genuine appreciation for the show:

…but then there are those that outright poke fun at the people who do enjoy it:

Several users have also taken to the habit of referring to each other the same way that the Ponies do as well, using the words “somepony” and “everypony” to replace “someone” and “everyone” respectively.
Meme Generator currently has several generators related to this, though they are all basically the same text with different images.

Common Phrases

While there are those who enjoy mocking the show through sarcasm, there are still many who are amazed by the art and animation quality and thus become hooked on the show. The catchphrase “Confound these ponies!” is used to express a playful hatred of the Ponies and the fact that they are now hooked on the show.

After an individual does get hooked on the show, fans of the show like to formally welcome them. “Welcome to the herd” has become a common phrase of greeting in brony culture.

Not every individual takes kindly to “bronies”, though. Numerous people have attempted trolling them. Incessant attempts of trolls to stop pony threads have been likened to the destructive never-ending hunger of parasprites, a creature first introduced in the series during episode 10, “Swarm of the Century.” This likeness has caused the term“parasprite” to be used in place of “troll.”

Despite receiving lots of hate from trolls, fans try to avoid being confrontational in an attempt to personify the message of kindness put forth by the show. But when enough is enough, it’s time to resort to love and toleration!“I’m gonna love and tolerate the SHIT outta you” is a phrase used to respond in a pseudo-hateful manner, and since its spread via image macro, “love and tolerate” has since become a term commonly used in place of would-be violent terms to express contempt in a joking, light-hearted manner.

Another common phrase is “20% cooler”, in reference to a line the character Rainbow Dash said during the episode “Suited For Success”. It is commonly used in order to dis another poster, claiming that they need to be ’20% more cooler".

Another popular phrase is “Ten Seconds Flat”, in reference to Rainbow Dash’s first appearance in the series when she claims that she can “clear every cloud from the sky in ten seconds flat”. It is commonly referred to when someone does something quickly.

Also, a few fans have speculated the sexuality of main character, Rainbow Dash, claiming that her rainbow mane stereotypically makes her a lesbian. This, combined with the light and fluffyness of the show, gave birth to the phrase “candy vag”, which is used in conjunction with several pony image macros.

Popular Characters

From Left: Derpy Hooves, Dr. Whoof, DJ P0N-3

Fans of the show noticed a strange gray pony in the background of the series, most recognizable by her scrunched up nose and crossed eyes. Fans named this character “Derpy Hooves”. Threads about the show sometimes tend to by derailed into threads dedicated to this character. In the episode, “Feeling Pinkie Keen”, Derpy appeared once more with her iconic cross-eyed look. Lauren Faust has been noted saying that the crew does know of Derpy’s fanbase and that the inclusion was probably a little easter egg that an animator left.

Derpy Hooves has even appeared as a Disaster Girl type character.

Fans have even dedicated an entire day to this character. March 1st is known as “Derpy Day.” Ways to celebrate include:
  • Making and eating muffins
  • Delivering letters
  • Wearing gray
  • Making “derp eyes” whenever a picture is taken of you or you see yourself in the mirror

Another character who has received this treatment from fans is a brown male pony with an hourglass mark. Fans have named this character “Doctor Whoof”, in reference to the popular British sci-fi series, “Doctor Who”. Fans have even went through the episodes to find instances where this “My Little Time Lord”, showed up and use it as evidence of his time traveling ability. Fanart of this character often shows him leaving a “Time And Relative Dimensions In Space” machine, or a TARDIS, a time traveling device used in “Dr. Who”.
Fans also took note of a pony named “Vinyl Scratch” DJ’ing in one of the episodes, whom they nicknamed “DJ P0N-3”. YouTube videos of P0N-3 soon followed, in which she is shown playing electronic, house, and club music in general made by artists including Skrillex David Guetta and Daft Punk (shown below):

The DJ P0N-3 videos have been mostly uploaded by YouTube users DJSCRATCHPONY, who currently has 37 clips of DJ P0N-3, and Trizero126, who has 10 uploads.
