Overheard In New York

Like the British Invasion Itself

NYU chick as "Back in the USSR" plays: Why are they playing so much 80s music?
NYU dude: It's cool, it's The Beatles.
NYU chick: Such a weird song, like Russia's all great or something.
NYU dude: I think it's supposed to be ironic.

Creepily gorgeous.

Katy Perry Halloween Special

All hail Queen Katy! Is there nothing this woman cannot do? First she valiantly fights for the rights of drunk heterosexual women to molest each other for a shot at hipster sexual ambiguity and attention from guys and now she's rocked up to a Halloween party as Freddie Mercury.

The History of Heels

Apparently high heels began as a Venetian fashion among courtesans in the fifteenth century. Catherine De Medici brought the craze to France in 1533 when she married the future Henri II and by the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries both sexes had taken to the elevating attire.

Marie Antoinette even went to the guillotine in them!

Dia De Los Muertos

"Catrinas" - uniquely Mexican figures depicted as richly-dressed skeletal women. (Dead ones - not Nicole Ritchie.)

The "Day of the Dead" is celebrated in Mexico and around the world on 1 and 2 November, corresponding with All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day in the Catholic calendar.

Days of the Dead celebrations actually pre-date Catholicism and have been around for at least 2,500 years. They can be traced back to the Aztec festival honouring the goddess Mictecacihuatl, "The Lady of the Dead."

During these days, families honour and commune with their deceased relatives, offering their favourite foods and drinks, placing marigolds ("The Flower of the Dead") on their graves and sometimes sitting at gravesites all night.

What a cool way to remember lost loved ones.
